Help University City Tornado Victims

Please help! The University City Chamber of Commerce is working with the University City Department of Community Development to collect donations for the residents in University City that were affected by the tornado last Thursday. If you wish to donate, please mail (7700 Olive Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63130) or drop off checks payable to U. City Chamber of Commerce, and place "Tornado" in the memo. The Chamber is currently working on setting up more collection sites so stay posted. Thank you for your generosity!

Small Business Workshop

Small Business Monthly RBOM

University City Chamber of Commerce's free Small Business Workshop, #3 in a series, is coming up on Thursday, April 24th from 9 AM - noon at the University City Public Library. This program will help businesses make smart decisions when spending money on print advertising. Graphic artists and advertising professionals will share tips on how to design an effective ad. Learn ways to better target where, when and how often you advertise. Professionals from Heeley Creative Brighton Agency, and the West End Word will share their expert advise. COCAcabana Spring Fling 2014 

COCA hosts its single annual major fundraiser in support of COCAeducation outreach programs on Friday, April 25th from 6:30 - 1:30 PM. COCAcabana features live and silent auctions, a seated dinner, dessert, entertainment and more! Tiered ticket prices and sponsorships are available for purchase.

Gallery Exhibition: Living Bridge - Carol Fleming Marks

St. Louis sculptor, Carol Fleming Marks, specializes in designing site-specific and one-of-a-kind artwork in clay. Each piece articulates its environment through the evolution of familiar forms, colors and functions. Marks constantly explores sources of personal inspiration; her work, both monumental and minuscule, embodies a refined aesthetic. This event is free and open to the public through Sunday, April 27th at COCA in the Millstone Gallery.

40th Annual University City Memorial Day Run

The 40th Annual University City Memorial Day Run, one of the oldest 10K races west of the Mississippi, will take place on Monday, May 26th! The U. City Memorial Day Run will provide runners of any level with an exciting and fun experience this Memorial Day. The 10K and 5K runs are the main event, but there is also a fun run for the whole family. The 10K and 5K will begin at 7:30 AM and the Fun Run will begin at 9:15 AM. Proceeds from this event will benefit the non-profit organizations: The Green Center, U. City in Bloom, and the University City Public Library. This year all registration will be done online with the exception of family registration, which can be completed at the University City Public Library.

Blueberry Hill features national touring bands and the best St. Louis bands. The music includes pop, rock, blues, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, country, folk and more. Wallet-size band schedules are available at the front door. Music rooms are 21+ only. Doors open at 8PM unless otherwise noted. Bands begin at 9 PM. St. Louis Master Gardener Plant Sale

The St. Louis Master Gardener Plant Sale takes place on Friday, April 25th through Monday, April 28th at the Greenhouse at South Technical High School (12721 W. Watson Rd.). This event is the annual plant sale of plants grown by the St. Louis Master Gardeners in the greenhouses at South Technical High School. Large selection includes perennials, annual, succulents, herbs, vegetables, aquatics and tropical. Dates and times are Friday, April 25th, 3 - 6 PM, Saturday, April 26th, 9 AM - 3 PM, Sunday, April 27th, 12 - 4 PM, and Monday, April 28th, 3 - 6 PM. Cash and checks accepted. Enter Webster's July 4th Parade

Applications are now being accepted for the Webster Groves Community Days 4th of July Parade. The parade will be held on Friday, July 4th, beginning at 10 AM. This year's theme is "Stars and Stripes." Deadline for parade applications is Tuesday, June 3rd, at noon. Entries received after the deadline may not be allowed to participate in the parade. Any entry received after the deadline that is allowed to participate, will be placed at the end of the parade. Be sure not to miss out on this fun filled event!

The Watson Terrace Christian Church (4205 Watson Rd.) has posted their 2014 BBQ schedule. They will have a BBQ from 12 - 7 PM on May 17th, June 21st, July 19th, August 16th, September 20th, and October 18th. There will be pork steaks, brats, chicken breasts, hot dogs, burgers and more! Annual Friends of Kirkwood Public Library Book Fair

The Annual Friends of Kirkwood Public Library Book Fair will take begin on Wednesday, April 23rd through Sunday, April 27th at the Former McDonnell's Market (12309 Old Big Bend). FIRST Robotics Championship

The FIRST Robotics Championship will be held this month, beginning Wednesday, April 23rd through Saturday, April 26th. This annual Championship pits teams against one another in a rock 'em sock 'em competition of homemade robots. Watch the best teams from all over the world compete for the top honors in design excellence, competitive play and sportsmanship. The event includes the FIRST Robotics Competition Championship, the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship, and the FIRST LEGO League World Festival. Also featured is the Junior FIRST LEGO League World Festival Expo. The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership. Lindenwood Park Spring Clean Up

The Lindenwood Annual Spring Park cleanup will get the park spruced up and ready for a long season of outdoor fun. Any time you would like to volunteer your time the morning of Saturday, April 26th, from 9 AM - 12 PM, would be greatly appreciated. Please bring hand tools such as a rake, shovel, broom and gloves. Wheelbarrows are also always helpful. This is a great service project for groups, if you are looking for an opportunity for your scouts, school, club or church. A second Park Cleanup will be scheduled in the fall.

Family History Conference

St. Louis Genealogical Society (StLGS) is sponsoring its 44th Annual Family History Conference, "Genealogy in the Computer Age," on Saturday, April 26th. The conference highlights researching on the computer and available resources. Not all genealogical information is available on the internet, but there is plenty to get you started. The featured speaker is internationally renowned speaker, David E. Rencher, AG, CG, FIGRS, FUGA, Chief Genealogical Officer for FamilySearch who will discuss "FamilySearch: Future and Vision," "Connecting the Community through FamilySearch," and "Electronic Resources for Your Irish Research." Other speakers will discuss more on the topic as well. This year, KMOX radio personality, Charlie Brennan, will give a short talk during the lunch hour on "Ten Things Historians Don't Know about St. Louis." Then he will be available over the lunch hour to sell and sign his new boo, Amazing St. Louis.  A large vendor area will include local genealogy societies and genealogical vendors with publications on a variety of topics. Rounding out the day's excitement will be 6 raffles! Be sure not to miss out!

Healthy Kids Day at YMCA

Healthy Kids Day & Camp Open House will take place on Saturday, April 26th from 10 AM - 12 PM at the Mid-County YMCA. Free activities include Girl Scouts, Dr. Joe Cutrona, Dentist, Camp Crafts, True Runner, Camp Lakewood, Cultural Awareness with Ms. Maria, Chiropractor, and Lights Up Children's Theatre Troupe. Operation Food Search's Screening of Award-Winning Documentary

On Monday, April 28th, Operation Food Search (OFS) will offer an opportunity for film lovers and the socially conscious to satisfy their appetites on all levels by hosting a benefit screening of the award-winning documentary What Matters? at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood. Proceeds from the event will benefit persons who struggle with hunger and food insecurity in the St. Louis Region. The film focuses attention on the global issue of extreme poverty as 3 friends attempt to live on $1.25 a day, the world's standard of extreme poverty, as they journey across 3 continents. Filmmaker and subject, Dan Parris, will conduct Q&A after the film to discuss the issues raised in the film. Advance ticket reservations for this all-ages screening are $10 and available no through April 27th on the OFS website. Tickets will also be available on April 28th when the doors open at 6:30 PM. The film begins at 7 PM. All proceeds from the ticket sales will directly benefit Operation Food Search. OFS will have its blue collection barrels at the event for guests to make donations of non-perishable food items. Anyone donating food items will be entered into a raffle for a gift certificate.

St. Louis Storytelling Festival 

The St. Louis Storytelling Festival will take place Thursday, May 1st through Saturday, May 3rd at various locations throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and in St. Charles County. This four-day storytelling extravaganza showcases the best regional and national storytellers - all unique in their performance styles, content and personalities. It encompasses activities for all ages, with special events featuring family storytelling, performances for adults including ghost stories and spiritual and faith-based programs, a youth storytelling concert and programs for the deaf. Featured tellers are Motoko, Jackson Gillman, Kim and Reggie Harris, Beth Horner, Bill Lepp and Tim Tingle. The festival concludes with a Saturday Night Storytelling Concert at the Touhill Performing Arts Center where all the featured storytellers will perform beginning at 7:30 PM.

19th Annual St. Louis Microfest

The 19th Annual St. Louis Microfest takes place from Friday, May 2nd until Saturday, May 3rd in the Upper Muny Parking Lot in Forest Park. The St. Louis Microfest is one of the premiere festivals in the St. Louis area! Microfest is a beer tasting festival that offers festival goers the chance to sample international and craft beers at 3 different session times over 2 days. Soap Box Derby & Auto Show

The Hill Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show & St. Louis Jaycee's Soap Box Derby Race takes place on Sunday, June 8th at Shaw VPA Elementary School (5329 Columbia, St. Louis, MO 63110). This tradition helps build strong family connections and community spirit in a way few things can. Registration is from 8 AM - 12 PM. Entry fee costs $10 and a display fee of $5. Awards will be given at 4 PM, and all awards must be picked up the day of the show. Dash plaques are given to the first 150 registrants. All proceeds will benefit St. Ambrose Athletic Association. ArborMeisters Beer Festival

In celebration of Arbor Day, the Garage Brewers Society has partnered with Forest ReLeaf of Missouri for a beer festival to showcase home-brewed beers, each one created to include at least one "tree" ingredient. All proceeds will go toward Forest ReLeaf to assist in "planting trees, enriching communities." The festival will be held on Saturday, April 26th, from 1 - 5 PM, at the CommuniTree Gardens Nursery (2194 Creve Coeur Mill Road) in Creve Coeur Park. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door on the day of the festival. The ticket price will include a tasting glass, light snacks, water and all of the beer you can handle. Be sure to purchase your tickets soon! There is a maximum of 200 attendees allowed. Those attending will have the opportunity to rate the various beers and vote for their favorite. May the best Garage Brewer win! Raffle tickets, additional food and beverages will be available for purchase for the duration of the festival!

SLU Billiken's Men's Basketball Banquet

The Saint Louis University Men's Basketball Banquet is set for Wednesday, April 30th at 6 PM at Chaifetz Arena. Tickets are $30 per person and may be purchased by calling the Billiken Ticket Office at (314) 977-1260. Free parking is available for guests in the Fred Weber VIP Lot. You may be recognized as a banquet sponsor with a minimum gift of $1,000. In exchange for your generosity, you or your organization will be recognized during the program. The 40th Annual University City Memorial Day Run, one of the oldest 10K races west of the Mississippi, will take place on Monday, May 26th! The U. City Memorial Day Run will provide runners of any level with an exciting and fun experience this Memorial Day. The 10K and 5K runs are the main event, but there is also a fun run for the whole family. The 10K and 5K will begin at 7:30 AM and the Fun Run will begin at 9:15 AM. Proceeds from this event will benefit the non-profit organizations: The Green Center, U. City in Bloom, and the University City Public Library. This year all registration will be done online with the exception of family registration, which can be completed at the University City Public Library.
